Levis and porn

I have been saying this for years. The way we will defeat fundamentalism, at home and abroad, is by using human nature against the puritanical retrogrades who inhabit the fundamentalist sector. Levis and rock and roll had as much to do with the fall of the Soviet Union as nukes and stealth bombers. The same is true in the current conflict with fundamentalist Islam. Porn and hip-hop will bring down our enemies faster than any military action. In the end they will be forced to quote Homicide's Meldrake Lewis, "... human desire is kicking us in the ass."

Progress cannot be stopped, there is no return to the good old days. In the end the advance of Western technology and culture will steamroll all opposition.

YOU GOTTA BELIEVE!!!

The Mets are 4 games ahead of the Braves and according to the NYT are stealing Yankee's fans. In honor of the Mets here is a song done by some kids from Brooklyn.

The kids are from The Imagine Project which seems like a really cool program.

I hate summer...

I know that makes everyone mad, but its true. I had forgotten this until reminded by P, yesterday. For the last few weeks everyone(which is to say, BBA and my Dad) have been asking me what is wrong? I honestly have had no idea, I just felt inexplicably blue. Not, by nature, a particularly introspective lad, I have vacillated between being mystified and apathetic as to the cause of my mood. So when P said "Dude, you hate summer." I went "Oh, yeah. I hate summer."
Some how just knowing why I feel bad, makes me feel better.

Quick list of things I also hate at this moment.

  • The Spurs
  • The Refs
  • The people tearing down Otterbutt's house.
  • The citrus agri-corps who are killing all the bees(I read about this on David Byrne's blog but I am to lazy to look it up right now.)
And the Jazz totally choked last night, but it has been a great season, and next year will be better. Go Jazz!!!

That's all.

Update: Here is a link to Byrne's post. And here is another article about said bee problem.

Jazz win game 2

WRITE IT DOWN!!!

Funduhmentalism and you. Or how I learned to love the stone age

Iranian fashion police go ballistic. This really is a peace loving, freedom engendering religion, isn't it?

Meanwhile, here is the intellectual equivalent of a beatdown from an American supporter of Sam Brownback. (It seems like it is a parody, but frankly when it comes to religious people I have a hard time telling the difference.)

The point, as always, is that religion and religious people simply cannot be reasoned with or expected to act in a civilized/enlightened manner.

Oh! Sunday sucked

The Spurs are the grimiest team ever. I mean how do they ever lose? Timmy gets every call, has he ever fouled out of a game? How many big men play in the league for ten years and never foul out. Okay, enough whining.
The Jazz got smoked and the Mets lost to the Yankees...sigh... They did win the series though so thats good and the Jazz will find their rhythm. D-Will needs to play the whole game like he did in the fourth quarter. I really don't believe that Parker or Bowen can stop him if he goes right at them. Sloan will have them ready to go on Tuesday.
So friends and neighbors, fasten your seat belts it is going to be a wild ride. Jazz in seven. Write it down.

Simmons pimpin' for the Jazz

Bill Simmons, ESPN's Sports Guy, has finally said it, (Because someone had to say it, the national media have given the Jazz no respect.) The Jazz are a "good freaking good basketball team." All you experts and others who are penciling in the Spurs or Suns as the Western Conference Champions, step back and wait for the series to be played. (So you don't have to look at the AL East standings at the beginning of the post. I will quote the relevant bit here.)

"Um ... why doesn't anyone seem to think that Utah has a chance in the next round? You weren't impressed by those two impressive road wins (Game 7 in Houston, Game 4 in Oakland), the way they're dominating the glass or their various scoring options in crunch time? What am I missing? I will never understand why so many people underestimated them in Round 2 ... you'd think a lesson would have been learned. That's a good freaking basketball team."
Also, I am beginning to think that the Jazz might be better off facing the Spurs on Sunday instead of the Suns on Tuesday. But because the Suns got jobbed by the NBA, I still will cheer for them. Also there is the possibility of some friendly wagers if the Suns and Jazz play, so there is another reason to hope the Suns win. My gambling addiction... Either way it has been nice to have a breather from the playoffs for a minute and watch as other teams struggle to close out their series. Seriously, having a game every other day for almost three weeks has been exhilarating, but exhausting. That said, can't wait until the next series starts. GO JAZZ!!!

Courage (For Hugh Maclennan)

I am a huge T-hip fan and apropos of some recent decision making, I found this quote from them relevant.

"...So there's no simple explanation
For anything important any of us do
And yea the human tragedy
consists in the necessity
of living with the consequences
Under pressure, under pressure"

While searching for it I found a site by people who are clearly bigger fans of The Tragically Hip than I am. They explained that these lyrics were paraphrased from the Canadian author Hugh Maclennan's book, “The Watch That Ends The Night.”

“But that night as I drove back from Montreal, I at least discovered this: that there is no simple explanation for anything important any of us do, and that the human tragedy, or the human irony, consists in the necessity of living with the consequences of actions performed under the pressure of compulsions so obscure we do not and cannot understand them.” (274)

I suppose sometimes my "obscure compulsions" lead me to a sort state of inaction that make almost any decision making impossible. So, as always, I simply exist in stasis and allow the world or people to do what it does without my input.

The problem is that I do not have a particularly Zen attitude towards these consequences. In fact, I usually find myself defiant and self-destructive in regards to the results of my inaction. Which leads me to question the use of the existential(and correct) attitude conveyed in the above passages. The capriciousness and essential meaninglessness of life is unarguable, to my way of thinking, but leaves something to be desired, at times. Instead of evoking freedom, it leaves one feeling the desire for a rubric or morality bigger than yourself. I imagine this feeling is at the root of fundamentalism of all sorts. My problems with authority of almost any kind prohibit me from embracing any kind of absolutism or fundamentalism, hence my present quandary. For which, as usual, I find solace in music and again the Hip deliver in the song Springtime in Vienna.

"We live to survive our paradoxes
We'll live to survive our paradoxes"

Jazz win!!! Suns get Screwed!

The Jazz win despite playing an error filled game. GO JAZZ!!! That said, I think the Warriors were a great team to watch and a great story. Boom Dizzle and company were a great opponent and I raise my glass to them.

The Suns lose Stoudemire and Diaw because the bullshit NBA enforces a rule needlessly and with total disregard for the interests' of the fans and the game. Hopefully, Nash can manage to win the game but without Amare, I don't see how. Good job Commissioner, You are an idiot.

Jazz, Suns. Keep hope alive!

Ok, the Jazz should close the series out tonight. The real news is the way the Suns fought back to win the game last night. They were dominated by the Spurs for most of the game and managed to win in the last six minutes.

Just for the record, the reason I want the Suns to win is that a point guard driven team like the Suns(or Golden State) can't beat the Jazz in a seven game series. Teams like San Antonio are much more difficult for the Jazz to dictate match-ups and pace against. If the Suns don't win, I at least wanted them to force six games and wear the Spurs down.

Either way, the Jazz are going to the NBA finals. Because no one has told the Jazz(especially Deron Williams) that they are not supposed to be this good. I think they have proven that they can win anywhere against anyone. This team has had to play different styles and adapted to whatever has been thrown at them, no other team has overcome the adversity that the Jazz have in these playoffs.

Once we get to Detroit, I am less sure of the Jazz winning, but as they say anything can happen.

Weekend Update

Two Jazz games this weekend but I have a severe internet dearth at home so I will not be posting. Here is how I see it going. The Jazz win tonight in a close game and lose on Sunday in a not so close game. But I could be mistaken...Hopefully Phoenix can get one in San Antonio. Please,Please,Please!!!

Apropos of nothing, (except I just had the Sugar Ray vs. Ali argument with BBA the other day)here is ESPN's top fifty boxers. #1, of course, is Sugar Ray Robinson. Good job fellas.

When turtles ATTACK... Cats.

Why, oh , why must my furry or furless, whatever the case may be, feline friends be constantly harrassed by this godless reptilian killing machine?

Rickey B Rickey

Prediction of the week, Rickey Henderson comes back and plays for Mets. Mets win another ring. Write it down.

Derek Fisher. FAAAANTASTIC!!!

I don't know what to say, just keep watching Jazz fans. And if you don't know by now you ain't never gonna know.

Jazz win

Incredible game one. It had everything and the Jazz won. I'm at a loss for words. This series is going to be off the hook. The D-Will/Baron Davis match up is ridiculous. Boozer was huge, and in this series size matters, ya hear?

I think that the game was exactly the game the Jazz needed to play and if they play like that I don't think the series even goes 6 games. We just need the Suns to nut up and win at least one game against San Antonio.

In case you were wondering, this blog is probably going to focus almost exclusively on the NBA playoffs until the finals are over so be prepared.

Game 7 Bitches!!!

The Jazz are BADASS!!! They went on the road and beat the Rockets, and regained homecourt in the second round, topping it off by making Tracy Lamar McGrady Cry! HA HA!!! Yes, they made Mr. First Round and Done cry.

Can't wait for the Warriors tonight, 7EO is gonna be jumpin' people. Its gonna be another nasty series but the Jazz win in Six. Here is my prediction after game 3. I said Jazz in 7. So, find your neighborhood bookie and take the Jazz.

Not only did T-Mac cry, but Van Gundy is also going to quit because the Jazz Rule. YOU GOTTA LOVE IT BABY!!!

Oh, By the way, not for nothin, but, Fuck you San Antonio. The Jazz are gonna fuck you up too. Write it down.

UPDATE: Simmons has Jazz in 5. The bandwagon starts here, people.

KSK's take on Mcnabb and Reid.

This is genius.

Teaser:

Andy: So this Kevin Kolb situation is going to be a problem?

Donovan: We got lots a problems motherfucker.

Andy: Please watch the language Donovan, I'm a man of God.

Donovan: God tell you to fuck me in the ass on Saturday?

Andy: Of course not Donovan, it's just that you tend to crack like a damn egg. That homosexual latin fella saved me last year and he's gone now. We had an opportunity to bring in a great prospect to back you up so we took it. We're just acting in the best interest of the franchise.

Donovan: Forget that second round cocksucker for a minute. I saw how ya'll traded out of the first round.

Andy: Well we just didn't see anybody on the board at the time that we really needed. By moving down we were able to take Kolb.

Donovan: And you just had to let the Cowboys step in the spot.

Andy: Trading within the division is really no big deal.

Donovan: You wouldn't be spoutin' that bullshit if you were gonna spend the next five years runnin' from that crazy asshole they drafted. He's gonna break my damn neck because you couldn't just draft a fuckin' receiver?

Kiper has Anthony Spencer as the defensive rookie of the year. Go Cowboys!!!
