QB's and teachers
Malcolm Gladwell has a peice in The New Yorker that compares drafting NFL Quarterbacks to hiring teachers. I think it is aeffective peice that shows some of the weaknesses in our current education model.
He follows up on his blog with this.
All of this is a long way of saying that instead of resisting the implausibility of the pairing of NFL quarterbacks and teachers, it is actually more interesting to embrace it. And what happens when you do that? You discover that the psychological situation facing the gatekeeper in both cases is identical: that confronted with a prediction deficit, the human impulse is to tighten standards, when it fact it should be to loosen standards.
This seems right to me.

what the big shitpile does for the republic party
The economic meltdown is a great boon for the Republic party, and the longer it lasts the better it is for them. If the economy free falls it will allow the republicans to have the political cover necessary to gut spending on domestic programs. This may include getting rid of the Soviet Security and most other entitlements. The fact that the rest of us will be eating dog food is of no concern of theirs.
Of course we will still spending enough on the military to keep the deficits around and feed the defense contractors in our Invasion world tour that will surely begin to keep people's minds off of the miserable lives they are leading. Just sayin'.
Update: Atrios nails it.

The awesomeness never stops. Now T.O. and Romo are fighting apparently. Good times Cowboys' fans, good times.
Update: It is even worse than first reported. The defense backs Owens and the coaches and owner say "Its all good." UGH!

Cowboy's December support group:part one
Jerry Jones "surprised" Barber did not play. WTF?
Witten takes the blame. Which is exactly what I said as the play happened.
Yes, its true the Cowboys are trying to kill me. It almost feels inevitable that we will fade in December now. Oh well, it is what it is. Hopefully, I'll feel better as the week goes on.

the joys of the drug war: fuck the police edition
This is awesome. One of main unintended concequences that the drug war produces is the loss of respect for the law and agents of the law. This is because it turns police from protectors of the law to breakers of the law. Just sayin'.
Here is the video.
Old black water, keep on rollin(or not.)
5 blackwater gaurds are charged with manslaughter. I hope the prosecutions don't end there. Ther are alot more high ranking people who deserve to be prosecuted. The truth about the Bush torture regime and it's victims needs to be brought fully to light. That said, hopefully this is just a start.

thank you mr. president
Apparently the Bush-disaster Katrina is still displacing and harming kids.
The health problems of Hurricane Katrina children are daunting. When the Children’s Health Fund, whose mobile health clinics have provided the only doctors and psychologists available to many of these families, reviewed the charts of children seen this year, researchers with the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University found that 41 percent under age 4 had iron-deficiency anemia — twice the rate for children in New York City’s homeless shelters. Anemia, often attributable to poor nutrition, is associated with developmental problems and academic underachievement.
And those trailers they are filled with formaldehyde which of course all growing children need.
“Not only has their health not improved since the storm,” the study said, “over time it has declined to an alarming level.”
This President(and this country) is completely fucked up. I find this intolerable. Why can't we function at even the most basic level. If these were white kids I gurantee you something would be done. This is important to remember, yes we elected a black man president but we still ignore the institutional racism that exists throughout our society. Katrina is the biggest example recently, but schools and the criminal justice system dysfunctionally rascist. So lets not break our arms patting ourselves on the back.
the joys of the drug war: Mexico edition
I don't even have anything snarky to say about this.
The sedated patient, his bullet wounds still fresh from a shootout the night before, was lying on a gurney in the intensive care unit of a prestigious private hospital here late last month with intravenous fluids dripping into his arm. Suddenly, steel-faced gunmen barged in and filled him with even more bullets. This time, he was dead for sure.
Drug war, FAIL.
